Re: [WW] Monsters,Creatures and Weird Science
As a point to ponder, let’s not all fall into the trap
of thinking that the Germans would be the only ones
making pacts or using knowledge they did not fully
understand. The Allies were desperate through a lot of
the war and would have been willing to take any
advantage available to them to turn the tide.
Nuclear weapons were a new science, which were rushed
into development without the full understanding of
their consequences. Yet, we used them willingly to
help end the war.
Imagine a group of boffins within Bletchly Park (sp?)
who come across ancient texts that could now be
translated. The knowledge held within (perhaps
rudimentary Rune law) would, IMHO, have been used
without a qualm if it hindered the Axis advance and/or
gave the Allies an advantage in the war.
There are as many adventure hooks based on Allied
misuse of arcane weapons and pacts as there are for
German misuse. Demons can come in many shapes and
forms so there’s little doubt they could also wear
many different uniforms.
Imagine during the initial shock as the Battle of the
Bulge began when seemingly from out of nowhere a fresh
German assault tore through Allied ranks. Perhaps the
generals of the day let loose something they shouldn’t
have in the mistaken belief that all was lost. Imagine
having your PC’s as an isolated squad within the
forest now hunted by more than just the advancing
Germans.
Imagine the PC’s are a long range patrol in Libya who
find a missing platoon far into the desert. This
platoon had been ordered to hold at all costs and they
did – to their deaths. Except they still haven’t given
up and will repel any and all comers until they’re
finally put to rest. Do the PC’s attempt to gun down
men of their own colours or do they attempt to find a
way to communicate with the lost platoon and convince
them their war is finally over?
The weird, bizarre, and plain nefarious are tools to
be (mis)used by all sides in a war. The bad guys
don’t have to have the monopoly on the good stuff.
Cheers,
Mr. B
