Re: [pyrnet] Aargh! My Pyr is BALD :(

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for writing back. Kodiak has a full beautiful tail and some of the fur on his head. He weighed 125 when I dropped him off and 119 when I picked him up.

Oh my!  How did you control yourself at the groomer - I would have been furious at this person and been a screaming idiot!  What possesed this person to shave the dog???????

I think I would be buying some spray sunscreen immediately so that Kodiak doesn't burn.  Maybe a formula designed for babies for less irritation.  I want to say their is a brand (Bullfrog) that has a formula for babies that also has bug repellant in it (but I would check with a vet first before putting bug repellant on a dog.) I was told by a vet and Liberty's breeder to not shave these dogs, that their skin can burn.  We trim Liberty's 'pants' and it takes 2+ months for it to grow out.  I hope the groomer steered clear of Kodiak's tail.  When Liberty got a huge amount of burrs stuck in the fur on the top of her tail, near the base, we had to cut it out, and the hair left was very short.  6 years later, and the hair that grew back feels like horse mane hair, and never gets more than 2 inches long.  Thank goodness it was a small area, and the surrounding hair kind of covers this odd patch of very course hair.

I'm guessing it would also be a good  idea to keep Kodiak inside during the peek 'sun' hours of 12-3 until his coat returns.

I'm sorry that Kodiak got a bad haircut.  Tell him that his 'Pyrnet' family still thinks he is handsome, hair or not :)

Best of luck.

Melissa

I took Kodiak to a (new) groomer to brush out his winter coat, clip his dews, remove a mat behind each ear and trim the fur under on his belly. I could see about an inch (or so) of pure white fur underneath. He ended up with a "summer cut." He barely has 1/8th of a coat.  He was an unhappy Pyr when I picked him up: He walked up to me and buried his muzzle between my legs and sat like a normal person in the passenger seat duriong the drive home. He loves the car but he is never like that.

Without getting into how mad at myslef I am along with how furious I am at the groomer, I have a few questions:
Any idea how long it will take to grow his coat back? He's an outdoor dog and summer (90 - 100 temperatures) is three months away.
How vulnerable is he to the sun? He is in the house normal be this time, but still.
Just how vulnerable is he to the elements?
We get spontaneous rains quite often and then right after it is very sunny - along with humidity and mosquitoes.
Right now the temps are in the 70's and the humidity is low (23%) but it is usually in the 70's.
He has no fleas and he is up to date on all his shots & his monthly heart worm.

Thanks
Christine/Kodiak
