RE: [pyrnet] Orthopedic question

Title: Message
Shari;

What a heartbreaking email on your clan, but with good news sprinkled in.  First, what wonderful things you have done for the rescues; kudos to you and your family for taking these babies in and making a new life for them.

In regard to the option of having the top of the femur removed....are they referring to the same procedure they use on dogs with hip dysplasia?  If so, my previous Alaskan Malamutes have had this surgery (2 malamutes on 3 hips) and have come through with flying colors and not problems.  The surgery extended their all too precious time with us by about 2-3 years.

I would also recommend talking with an ortho to understand all options available as well as costs.  Please if possible, keep the group updated as to what the status and progress is, as I will be anxious to hear, and see if we can advise financial help if needed.

Thanks Elaine! I will check it out. We have Auburn 3 hours away, but from the people I know who have gone there, I think that their prices are pretty high. Also, they do some of those horrible Iams lab experiements on dogs. I might check with University of GA.

Shari, I think that I would at least make an appt with the ortho to see what he thinks about both treatment options or he may come up with something else. You may want to check around and see if there is a veterinary teaching hospital in your area and make an appt for a consult there.
