No way is a female too young.  My Mishka at age 8 months reacted to 
someone who was drunk and begging for money at the park.  She stood 
between me and the person and growled.  I was amazed and so proud 
of her.  Three times in her 12.5 years, Mishka told me to be aware of a 
human and she was always correct in her judgement :)  What a great 
gal she was!  I still miss her!
