When Pico was a puppy, I fed him Eukanuba Puppy chow with cottage cheese mixed in. When he got to be around 6 months, I switched him over to the adult large breed version and mixed in table scraps. I have since eliminated the table scraps and he seems to do much better. There are some times when he eats more than others, but as long as he doesn't eat for a couple days or looks healthy overall, I don't worry about it too much.
