Nancy, I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel.  While I love it for carpets - does an
excellent job of getting up dog fur and the dirt they drag in (we have 5
large house dogs), it is awful on non-carpeted floors.  Even when I lower
the head to the lowest setting, dirt and bits and pieces fly out underneath
the head.  So, I hoover the large rugs down stairs and the wall-to-wall
upstairs, and sweep the rest of the downstairs floors.  This works for me.
