[pyrnet] Older Dog Throwing Up...

Hi,

I'm new to the Pyr list (I may not even be submitting my message correctly as this is my first one!) and couldn't help but comment about your older dog.  We have a 2 year old male, and before him we had a female who passed away at 10 years old.  I don't want to say anything to scare you, but I understand why you're concerned about intestinal upsets that don't seem to be going away, and you're certainly right to be concerned about a 12 year old.

While throwing up and diahrrea as you well know, are symptoms of a thousand things you might want to have some blood work done. Our female developed a form of cancer that we were still trying to pinpoint the exact location of when we chose to have her put down because she had just gotten so sick. Our girl started out with occasional throwing up and diahrrea that quickly advanced to bigtime throwing up and major diahrrea.  Her bloodwork showed that she was anemic...likely due to some internal bleeding. We had her "scoped" through her throat and found nothing, but the scope was a pediatric scope and was not long enough to travel the length of a Pyr!  We were going to have to scope her through the back end to explore the entire distance, and did not pursue that because by that point, she'd just become way too ill.  I later discovered that a littermate had passed away of cancer of the spleen and had suffered identical symptoms.  My girl had been the healthiest dog around for her entire life until this illness presented itself.  While sudden skin issues could certainly be allergies...I can't help but wonder in a 12 year old if they could be related to her immune system if it is being taxed by some other internal problem.

I'm really sorry to be the dark cloud here. : (  I'm a big believer in bloodwork because I think it can be a great indicator of something that's not right inside. I hope that you find out what's going on with your girl, and that it turns out to be nothing!  I wish you the best of luck with her. -- Beth
