Pip, I do clip the hair out, I also use something called Musher's Secret Wax (http://www.chinookwind.com/footcare.htm) for their pads -- it was developed for sled dogs and it helps protect their feet and isn't toxic when they lick their feet.

I get it at our local pet store -- but you can find it at the link above.
