Hi, everyone!
I have a question for anyone that may have experience in testing an injured Pyr for neurological damage. I just got off the phone with the vet at the emergency hospital where I brought a female Pyr today. She was hit by a car on Thursday and has spent the last four nights at the local AC&C where they knew she had a broken femur but policy did not permit any kind of treatment, except Torb for pain. Their policy also dictated that they hold strays for five days in the hopes of an owner claiming her. I am a Placement Partner with AC&C and today they called me, as she had not eaten for four days and they were concerned. After much coercion and about 3 1/2 hours, I was able to get her out of there and bring her to the veterinary clinic where the orthopedic specialist practices (he will be in tomorrow).
Results of the x-ray are definitely broken femur. The vet said it was like an explosion and in six pieces. This will require a plate for sure. Also, her pelvis is broken on the same side, but that is not as concerning (to them) and should heal on its own.
She is such a sweet, sweet girl and the vet described her as very stoic. She (the vet) was testing her for neurological damage and has been unable to get a response, even on the uninjured legs. She is alert and her color is good. She was dehydrated and is on an i.v. They also have administered a Sentinal Patch, which is like a morphine patch that should work for about five days, so at least her pain is under control. This may also be keeping her for responding for the neurological tests. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Also, if anyone knows of someone missing a Pyr in the south Florida, particularly Boynton Beach area, please let them know to contact me. Otherwise, she will be available for adoption when she is back on all fours.
Many thanks and kisses to all the marshmallow heads :)
