I believe they are called "Great White Pyrenees" because of a cartoon show from the early 80's called "Belle and Sebastian" starring Belle, a "great white pyrenees" dog. I have never been able to find it on video, but watched it when younger and, well, my Pyr is named Belle. LOL. Anyway, the plot consisted of lots of French and Spanish policemen chasing Sebastian and Belle, the "great white monster" around the Pyranean mountains. That's about all I remember... anyway, that's where that odd knickname comes from, I think...
