RE: [pyrnet] chat: Pico gets a fence

Elaine;
You have just made Pico the happiest dog in the world!!! If we could all
hope for a world without leashes, it would be the absolute best.
Last fall, I finally had fencing installed on 6 of the 12 acres surrounding
the house. This has made an unbelievable difference in Czar the Pyr, and
Raisa the Mal; I cannot believe after raising dogs for 17 years, I had not
done it sooner. They can run, patrol, chase animals, dig holes (thank you
Czar for your professional landscaping designs) and wear themselves out.

Not only has it made their lives much better, it saves me from being flown
through the air on a flexi-lead when Raisa the Mal saw a squirrel, rabbit,
or any other creature. It has also saved me from chasing Czar into the
adjoining marsh, where he got stuck in quick sand last August in 95 degree
weather, and I could not reach him, and he could not get out. I fell over a
log and rolled down the hill in trying to get to him, meanwhile getting
chewed up by hundreds of nasty mosquitoes and sweating to death. However,
with gentle, calm coaxing, he finally pulled himself out and came back to
dry land. It was at that point, that I was getting a fence, no matter what.
For their safety and protection, as well as my own!
It is especially fun in the winter, their favorite time of the year; as they
will dig snow tunnels, romp around with frozen icicles on their faces, eat
snow and ice, and have a great time.
You will not regret the investment you have just made.....it will keep Pico
safe, allow him to use his guarding skills, gain valuable exercise, and give
you some sanity!
Kudos to you!
Beth, Czar and Raisa in Rural Wisconsin

Well, it took me two years after moving into my house, but Pico finally has
a fence. He was very patient about it, didn't moan and groan when I had to
replace the furnace before I fenced in his yard. He didn't moan and groan
when I had to replace the 75 year old wiring before I fenced in his yard.
This year, he finally got it.

His patience really paid off, he got almost an acre of stockade and
chainlink enclosed yard to patrol. Thursday was the great unleashing of the
pup and he was off. Well, not exactly, it did take him a while to realize
that he was no longer required to stay within 20 feet of me. The clue light
has finally come on and this morning he patrolled the perimeter of HIS yard
in true Pyrenean fashion. Now he will be able to invite all his friends over
for play time instead of always being the guest.

Watching him last night, I did start to think that with such a large area to
patrol, it might be better if he had a little help. Last year, I did think
about getting another dog, but not having a fenced in area made it too
difficult. I think it just might work out now.
