Jeff,

Have you tried clicker training Sophie?  That is, in my opinion, the
best way to train them to listen.

If Sophie doesn't want to come, make a game out of it.  Keep your voice
very upbeat and pleasant, call her and run in the opposite direction.
If she is coming in your direction, keep going in the opposite direction
until she has reached you.  Then treat her, praise her, fall to the
ground and play with her ... just make it so much fun that she will want
to come next time.  (Your neighbours may think that you've lost a few of
them up there, but it works for a dog, so don't worry!)
