I've had mixed luck with mixed styles and brands of brushes.

I've found that using two different styles work best with Patrick. 

I use a handled wire brush (with angled wires) to work out the loose mats and 
smooth the top coat, and a steel comb design to get the undercoat afterwards.

Both are available at your local Petco/pet superstore. 

Try to avoid thinning combs, as they will completely screw your dog's coat up.
