Yes, brush him out thoroughly first.
Mix the shampoo with water before putting it on him - such as in a jug.  It
will help it spread easier.
Make sure you rinse, rinse, rinse.
Have lots of towels ready.

And yes, sending him to a groomer will be a LOT easier! ;-)
