Year ago we had a Border Collie that got it twice, and was treated successfully for it. We had her on medication, but she still picked it up. She lived a long life.

The treatment is risky, but many, many dogs do just fine with it. However, he can never be treated again (as far as I know) so must be kept on preventative religiously. Good luck, we'll be saying prayers for Mick.
