Man charged for neglecting his injured dog

NEWMARKET, Ont. (12 December, 2001) -The Ontario Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday charged Rocco
Mandaliti of
the City of Vaughan Township with failure to provide suitable and
adequate care and causing unnecessary pain and suffering
following the
surrender of his injured Great Pyrenees dog, Bianca.

On December 5, two Ontario SPCA investigators responded to
complaints
from concerned citizens who had witnessed the two-year-old,
female dog
hobbling and suspected that she had a broken leg. From
information
available to investigators it appeared that the dog had been
injured for
about four weeks. The dog was surrendered to the Ontario SPCA for
further examination and care.

Dr. David Brown, the Ontario SPCA's Director of Veterinary
Services,
examined and x-rayed Bianca at the Ontario SPCA Centre in
Whitchurch-Stouffville. He determined that Bianca had a broken
pelvis
and a severe break in her rear right leg. "We do not know exactly
how
Bianca received her injuries," says Dr. Brown "but it would have
taken
some kind of severe impact, such as being hit by a car, to have
caused
the breaks in her pelvis and leg." Bianca was also determined to
be
underweight and her coat was dirty and matted.

On December 10, Bianca underwent orthopedic surgery at the
Ontario SPCA
Veterinary Clinic by Dr. Shawn Bruch of the College Manor
Veterinary
Hospital. Following the surgery Bianca will need three to four
weeks for
recovery and then an additional six to eight weeks of quiet
recuperation, after which time she will be placed for adoption.

It is estimated that Bianca's surgery will cost about $3,500. The
Society would greatly appreciate any financial assistance the
public
could provide in caring for Bianca. Donations should be to the
Ontario
SPCA's Protecting Animals in Need (PAIN) Fund.

A photograph of Bianca is available via e-mail from the Ontario
SPCA.
