Re: [pyrnet] Allergies in Pyrs?

Hi Kelly and also Mandy -
We moved from northern Illinois to Hilton Head, SC last year with our 4 year old male pyr, Cody.  Have had 3 pyrs and never had hot spots as normal brushing kept the undercoat shedding and skin breathing.  Well, not in South Carolina. First year was murder - itch, itch, itch hot spot heaven. Vet kept saying medicated shampoo monthly, Vit. E and omega oil pills and SHAVE the Dog.  I contacted our breeder in Illinois and she was so helpful.  Cleared up the hot spots with the help of cutting fur around area, antibiotics for staph infection, topical Rx for spots and more medicated shampoos.  On the advise of the breeder Cody went through the entire summer here without one hot spot and no coughing allergy.  Here is what I did,
1. Switched kibble to Wellness Brand.
2. brushed Cody twice a week very, very well. Starting at bottom and moving up -- parted his fur with one hand and bushed with the other, move hand, part, brush.  Then take a rake and go get all the loosened undercoat out.
3. One Derm Cap for large dogs every day.

It worked for us.  Good Luck to you and your wonder dog.
