Our male Pyr Patou, now 6 years old, had OCD surgery at the
age of seven
months. He actually whimpered, the pain was so great and the
first symptom
was a limp. Pyrs are normally so stoic. It broke my heart to
hear him cry
out in pain. Our vet performed surgery by a new technique
less invasive
than some older techniques (Linda, perhaps you can clarify).
It was very
difficult to keep him still during the recovery period, and
he had some
minor setbacks. The x-rays also showed OCD of the other
shoulder. However,
this was not operated on and maybe the (relative) rest
resolved the
problem. At the present time Patou shows no signs of
problems and sprints
the whole length of our ten-acre property like an Olympian.
If surgery will be needed eventually for the pup, I would
recommend doing
it early, especially if the dog is in excruciating pain like
our Patou was.
