Been a little out of touch for several days but have to
comment on the kids vs. dogs discussion.
As the mother of two human children and an array of furry
children I must tell you that our children (now grown and gone from home) always
told everyone who would listen that we liked the dog better than we liked
them. In the interest of instilling honesty in them by example we never
denied their statement. How could we not like the dogs better? They
never talked back (except for a Newf. who would mutter what sounded like
obscenities under her breath when reprimanded), when told to sit and stay they
would do so without threat of retribution of Biblical proportions, they ate what
you put in front of them (never heard "Chili Mac again?" from a dog), and
perhaps most importantly they never outgrew the shoes and jeans that were
purchased only two weeks before.
But on the other hand where we might have put ourselves in
harms way to protect one of our fur children; given a choice between the animal
and the child there would never have been a moment's hesitation.
