RE: [pyrnet] recommendations for puppy chow
she is not an expert on giant breed dogs), but I wanted
to check with the Pyr
group (you folks) to get your recommendations.
ONE YEAR OR TWO???
Neither - try 6 months - at least that was what was
recommended by my breeder and others.

I agree, earlier is better. My vet (owns Marrema's and Rhodesians) said to
take Zeus off Iams large breed formula at aprox 8-10 months. He did at the
time have an explanation, but I can't remember what it was. Sorry!
Zeus was on a very strict diet, as our fear was rapid growth syndrome. My
vet said he was growing at the ultimate pace. We did not want him growing
fast. With a pyr's too short life span, we wanted to give him every chance
at a healthy life.
Since then I've tried to learned allot on nutrition, and have really have
become concerned with "commercial" dog food including Iams. I've been told
that some not only contain harmful preservatives,(which can cause not only
medical problems such as cancer, but also aggression) but also rendered
uthinized dogs and cat's. It is really scary and disheartening to think
you've been feeding your animal the best, to find out you may have been
harming them.
I don't know how accurate all the information is, but to be sure, I've
changed to an all natural dog food. I tried BARF, but just couldn't commit
;)
It doesn't have a long shelf life as it's preserved with a natural oil, but
how long does a bag of dog food last in a house anyways, especially when a
pyr lives there!
I noticed immediately that Zeus did not need as much food to satisfy him.
Just relating what I've learned.
