Re: [pyrnet] Newbie
Michele,
What fun that you are getting a new pup. Hope to see lots of posts about the
pup.
Here's my thoughts on your questions:
1. We feed either Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food or Iams Large Breed Puppy
Food. We like the lower protein %. We usually change to adult food around 6
months of age. We avoid high protein foods.
2. Your pup may feel better if you leave a radio on in her area at night. Will
the pup be in the house? How about a crate in your bedroom?
3. Water should be available for the puppy. By 9 weeks many pups prefer their
food dry. We don't feed milk.
4. Toys - our current pup (little miss terror....who chews everything she can
get her little teeth on) loves her kong, her rope toy and her stuffed squeaky
ball. She does not like the hard nylon toys.
5. You can put a soft buckle collar on the pup right away and begin coaxing her
to walk on leash. Don't force her to exercise more than she wants (i.e. long
walks) until she is at least a year and has finished growing.. The nice thing
about getting a young pup is that you can pick it up and get it outside quickly
when they start to have an accident in the house....a great help in
housebreaking.
6. Get a crate that will fit her when she is grown.
7. If you do give bones, make sure that they are not the type that will
splinter and get caught in throat or intestines. Large knuckle bones are ok but
better for grown dogs than for young pups. Be careful with rawhides. I've
heard of pups choking on them. pigs ears can cause upset stomach.
8. Feeding. I usually recommend feeding a pup 4 times a day as much as they
will eat in 20 minutes and then pick up the food. Having said that, I have to
admit that I leave food out for my current pup all the time.
Good luck. Pups are great fun, and sometimes a real challenge, but they do
grow up.
