Yes, Joe -- there are many great breeds of dogs originating in the Middle East.  When we traveled through Egypt, dogs were everywhere.  At the one pharonic site outside of Cairo, the care taker was very proud of his "guard dog".  It was a young shepherd-type of dog,  still very much a pup, and very loved.  As we wondered through the ruins, he followed us, never straying far from his master.  

From what I have read, and seen in past reports on the Taliban, they are a radical political group who have no respect for other faiths or any beliefs other than their own, women, or animals.  They are not "normal" Muslims.
