Conjunctivitis is simply an inflamation of the conjunctiva of the eye. The
conjunctiva is the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelid and part of
the eyeball. The cause of the inflamation can be bacterial, viral, fungal
or physical. Physical causes include irritation (does you dog hang its head
out the window?), allergies or even foreign bodies. Bacterial and viral are
just what they say and often present as a puss discharge. Viral and fungal
causes are not common. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotic
ointments. While it is wise to be careful when treating any infection, eye
infections take no more precaution than any other. Probably the most common
conjuctivitis we see is in dogs with "loose" eyes where dust etc collects
inside the eyelid and causes constant irritation and weeping.
