We have a Border Collie next door (the two have yet to agree on heirarchy and it's quite comical watching their antics -- especially the BC who is playing some highly intellectual mindgames, and has become somewhat depressed over losing "her" kids to another dog.) She plays catch, etc. Do/can Pyrs learn this kind of play? Hi Jeannie, I have a male Pyr named Zeus, he does not like to pay ball etc. but loves to play what I call "Tag" or "come get it if you can" with my kids. He grabs a stick and tries to get the kids to chase him. He even lets them catch him once in a while, they hold the stick and walk around together. If the kids get it, he chases them and gently grabs the stick (make sure its a long one to avoid accidents) and runs the other way. Its hilarious to watch, and they all enjoy themselves. Now he is only 16 months, so I don't know if he will always want to play that game. But I was told by my trainer, that "Tag" is one of the best games you can play with a pup/dog, as not only is it fun for all, but its a great fun way to teach a dog to "Come" to you. As you run you can say "come". The dog will associate coming to you with good, happy, fun, things. Good luck and have fun, P.S. I agree with Barb that obedience training is a must, with any large breed dog, as they tend to have a will of their own and like to exercise this. Sariena Owned by Zeus(Pyr) & Pepsi(SheppardX) |
