Re: [pyrnet] When is it appropriate for a dog to bite? Society's reactions
I agree completely with you Barb on this. I have also found that in many
areas police are poorly informed ( or maybe don't care ) on how to handle
situations with animals.
I'm sure I've mentioned the two labs that were shot standing on their
front lawns when their house alarms went off and the police came. They
claim the dogs threatened them. Witness's said the dogs just
stood on their front yards and barked. It has made me wonder how to get
the point across that no object in my house is worth more that a living
being, and I don't want my dogs killed. Secondly, if someone had
actually been on the property the dogs would have been checking it out.
Thirdly, Labs are not usually excessively aggressive. The owners offered
to pay for the police to take a course to learn how to better handle dog
situations. The dept refused, saying they had the right to defend
themselves?
In my mind it only would have been justified if the dogs left their
property and went for the police. Even then, from a dogs point of view,
a police officer could look suspicious. At any rate, the dogs simply
protected their property. Then to top it all off, the police did a
terrible job of it, and there were many complaints about what the dogs
went through before they died. The poor owners were distraught when they
got home. Things like this is what really gets you to thinking! Cindy
