Karen, there was an article on NPR (National Public Radio) in the news
programme called "The World", put on by the BBC this past Thursday. Seems
foot and mouth is common in Asia, Africa and some parts of South America.
It's been speculated that import rules concerning bringing uncooked meat
into the UK had been disobeyed. There is also speculation that during the
process in which swill is produced to feed pigs had been faulty. Seems
there are special processing plants that take meat byproducts, and other
"good stuff" to make pig feed (swill), and this has to be specially cooked.
Well, something went wrong, and if the swill isn't properly cooked, there
is a very good chance of passing on disease. By unlucky fate, these two
events became related.
Reading on the web site about foot and mouth, animals can recover, but they
are never fully rid of the disease. Because the disease is so contagious,
it is safer in the long run to destroy the animals. I just hope they are
doing it humanely!
