A large beach towel used as a sling is perfect.

ACL pre and post surgery is extremely painful for dogs.  Give him a 
few days and then you'll be wondering how to keep him quiet <grin>.   
Some home cooked chicken and rice should tempt his palate too.  As 
long as he's drinking water I would not worry too much about his 
appetite.
