Well,
I didn't do anything so organized, and my puppies and kittens all moved to the
same barn about the same time. My only problem was that the 6 week
old kittens and 6 month old Pyrs fell in love with each other and all wanted to
play. I was always "rescuing" a kitten that was about to be squashed by a
Pyr paw that she WANTED to play with. The cats and dogs still play
together, but the cats squirt back through the fence when necessary.
Hi Lisa,
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Puppies are so cute! Especially Pyr Puppies :o)
I have introduced dogs to cats, and cats to dogs. Puppies get so excitable...he might think they are his toy until he finds out his friends have claws. When I brought Melvin home for the first time he was stabilized, and they checked him out. They were there first, and there are territorial rights even with cats. Our cats quickly checked Melvin out, and were given attention while they did, so they knew they were not going to be replace, but this new, happy, bouncy, addition needed to be accepted.
Their food was placed in different places of the house...as far away from the others food as I could get it. Also their living quarters. Melvin was trained that down stairs was their space, and he was just not allowed.
Later on we found out that he loves to chase cats when outside. He got the counting rule just like the kids, and if I reached three and he didn't stop...he got grounded, and place in a designated time out area. He was told not his kitties, and it worked like a charm. He did, and does still chase other cats though ...just not his kitties ... lol
Anyway, my advise would be to let the cats have a space of their own separate from where the pup will primarily be. A room that they can go to, and know that is just their own ...a sanctuary.
Later on I eased their scratching stuff, and toys into the same area as Melvin's area, but their food areas are still very far away from each other. The animals get along very well, and go on walks together often. The cat doesn't have to have a leash though...lol
Also the cats we have now are not the same cats that we had when we got Melvin.
Have a Awesome time with your new addition.:o)
Best wishes, Merri,
