Absolutely right. I was (am?) presuming that we have no absolute knowledge
of the parents but we do know that a great or great great or whatever
ancestor *was* a known carrier. Defined for my purposes as a dog that we
know for a fact has produced an affected. If we know that fact but nothing
absolute about the parents or the intervening generations, then the
individual dog has a 50% chance of carrying. Which is one of the negative
things about recessives which are, in general the "easiest" form of
inheritance to get a grip on.

carrier or affected. If you have a dog that is not affected or not a
carrier
it (by itself bred to a non carrier or affected dog or bitch) has a 0%
chance
of producing a carrier or affected dog.
