[PyrNet-L] Lost and Found
Hi All,
I just finished a really good book called "Lost and
Found," by Elizabeth Hess. It's a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day
in a country animal shelter where Ms. Hess volunteered (and still does).
While some of the people profiled in the book are "anti breeder," it
did seem to favor serious breeders who are concerned with improving their
chosen breed, don't breed for sheer profit, etc., and really trashed puppy
mills. In fact, there's an account of a raid on a puppy mill that is just
heartbreaking. Ms. Hess writes about all of the purebred dogs that show up
in the shelter, that are adopted out, and eventually returned ... some of them
several times, until the decision is made to euthanize them to make room for new
arrivals. From just reading this book, it's easy to understand why some
people choose to not deal with the whole issue of rescue. It's depressing
at the very least.
The book is 219 pages long but is a quick read ...
in fact, I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day. I'm recommending
it on this chat group because it seemed pertinent to everyone who posts here;
breeders, rescue volunteers, rescue dog owners, and all of us who in general
disapprove of irresponsible dog owners.
