Re: [PyrNet-L] Re: failure of Rescue

Mike,

I'm glad your sister-in-law took in that golden and got it on the road to good health. Every animal deserves a chance. Anyone deciding to take on the responsibility of a pet should be prepared (and able) to care for it properly. Even the best cared for animals can become ill or be hurt in an accident. You are right on about waiting for the right time though. It's no different from deciding to have kids. (Gee, I didn't expect the baby to be sick all of the time. This is costing me a fortune in medical bills! This isn't working out the way I thought it would. Is there any way to send the baby back??)

Pets are expensive, require a lot of time, and need the proper space/environment. If more people waited until they could provide these things, more people would be "successful" pet owners, hopefully reducing the number of animals given up to shelters and rescues. Looking at a cuddly little puppy can make all good sense fly out the window. The need for instant gratification takes over ... it happens. What you said about educating one's self is crucial.

In one of life's want to laugh/want to cry episodes...My sister-in-law
bought a dog at Canton last month. I wanted to throw-up when she was
excitedly telling about almost buying a pyr puppy but settling on a 6 wk old
Golden Retriever. She is already out $200 that she paid for the dog and
another $300 in vet bills. The dog had worms and a respiratory infection.

$500 would buy a very nice dog in almost any breed if she had bothered to
educate herself. But of course waiting months (or ten years like we did)
for the right time and the right dog just does not suit her.
