I agree with you on this, and I also think that here in the US, many shows
ARE beauty pageants in the sense that the only the surface of the dog is
looked at. Last night we watched the first evening of Crufts on television.
When the judge was examining the Yorkie, the judge actually took the
handler's brush and ran it through the dog's coat. The commentator noted
that he was doing this to get a better feel for the texture of the coat and
that you just didn't see that at American shows. What really ticks me off
with American shows are the judges who after they've examined your dogs, and
ask you to take them around the ring, don't even watch the dog move. When in
the ring, I only have those few precious minutes to have my dog impress the
judge, and I want every minute that I'm entitled to.
