Re: [PyrNet-L] Re: command 'Come' and feeding-update

Thanks Liz. Mike and Lynda, Ariege, Michaelene, Judith, Barb, Robyn, Cindy
for the many ideas on teaching 'come'....and anyone else that responded
(sorry if I missed your name here).
This week I've been readjusting their diets...cutting way down on the
chow to 5 cups and adding eggs, powdered milk, fats..turkey meat (and some
of the scratch turkey soup I made for the family...with rice in it) started
feeding them twice a day..they still acted starving and finished up every
piece of chow..upped chow by one cup ....just yesterday began feeding 3
times a day..they're up to 9 cups each now. when I brought them inside to
sleep Isis kept getting up into the sink and 'prewashing' the dishes for me,
grazing for crumbs, getting into trash can...so I fed them again (this was
3rd feed). Due to advice on feeding from Bev and Susan I'm hoping that the
pups will soon feel full and not act ravenous all the time. Jupiter is quite
thin..Isis doesn't seem so but fur feels dry..like my bleached hair..and
she's always hungry. She eats slowly...compared to Jupiter she is a very
dainty trencherman.
Have been giving them treats...whatever is at hand that is
healthy...part to supplement, part to teach 'sit' and 'treat' (re:the 'come'
command). The oddest one was the night I was eating a handfull of
raisins..they got in front of me and plunked bottoms down in the prettiest
'sit'....hmmm..put tiny raisin in each gapeing maw...funny site to watch
them work it over and chew....seems they enjoy a sweet treat too. Naturally
we shared the raisins. Someone said that fruit was OK for them.
After their last feeding last night the grazing stopped and they settled
in to sleep. I have been putting Jupiter in Ren's room (son, age 11) and he
sleeps with him on the futon lower bunk, closing door, put Isis in my
room...closing that door...so they don't have run of the house / eat more of
the furniture (once my antique wicker couch used to have TWO ends and the
oak rocking chair had whole rockers). Instead of closing them in last
night...they had just eaten...I left the doors open. And this morning
everything was fine. I had forgotten and left a loaf of bread on the dinning
table...it hadn't been touched. Perhaps this was just a fluke but I'm
hopeful that the pups are beginning to get enough to eat. I feel bad that I
didn't understand what and when to feed them before....and greatly
appreciate all the advice from the Pyr list.
I have photo of the dogs that I can send if anyone wants to see them.
Bev may post them on her site soon. Again, thank you all very much. Sorry
about length of this post...just thought some of you might enjoy knowing how
much all your collective knowledge has improved life for my pups.
