Hi Cindy,
I have never seen an adult male Pyr back down (of our breeding).  I have
seen them choose to taper off a fight and/or choose not to fight.

I did once see an adult male charge a coyote as if to kill--then re-think
when he realized it was a female coyote in heat.  In that case, he sat down
beside her and the two of them surveyed the countryside from the hill they
were sitting on.
It really is a dog-by-dog action.
