Re: [PyrNet-L] Pyr story for ya

Scott, we too have P. B. Pigs, rescues, and work for a pig rescue group.
Rocky was viciously savaged by a pack of G.S.D.'s when he was only around
3 mo. old. That poor baby was one heck of a mess when we got him and
pigs do not heal well because of their fat, it is a long slow process
with endless drainage problems from deep puncture wounds.

But before you get rid of Jasper I would suggest you take some time with
him. Especially since he doesn't seem to bother the chickens or anything
else. The bad part about pigs is their own high pitch screaming, and
their willingness to turn and attack the dogs. It actually can be quite
confusing to the dog, and things escalate. I would not like to see them
go at each other in a small area, I think it would add more confusion in
the dogs mind. I would confine a pig ( a calm one ) in an area you can
work with. Always be there! With the dog on a secure lead, walk him
near the pig, watching his reaction. If he lunges or gets too excited (
he might think it is a game ) yell "NO", yank him back, put your flat
hand in front of his face ( as if for the stay command ), and keep
re-asserting that the pig is off limits. Move him around the pig
repeating the no with hand signal. You are attempting to let him know
that the pigs are off limits. This will need to be worked on, and
repeated! It is no overnight fix. Since he is not a problem with the
other critters, I think this can be straightened out, he is after all a
Pyr. so it has to be there. Be very firm, even rough if necessary for
the first little bit, so Jasper really gets the picture that what he did
was very very bad in your eyes, and you are really upset by that
behavior. By the same token, really praise him if he seems to be getting
the picture. Years ago I had a Great Dane kill one of my Ducks. She
only did it once, she learned real quickly how upset "Mom" was by this
behavior, using that method. I hope this may help some, and I hope you
let us know how it turns out. If I can offer anymore suggestions please
let me know. I would like to think that Jasper can keep his happy home
and be a productive member of the group! Good luck! Cindy.
