[PyrNet-L] Rawhide chews
Hi list,
Saw a question about rawhide chews, and FYI have, with Earl
Wolfe's permission, forwarded this info on the manufacture.
I will follow this with another on Pigs ears.
After reading this info, I think we should all go along with
Albert and keep chewing on those stale bagels. BTW, Cajun
cut her teeth on stale French Bread and marrow bones.

Hi All:
Here is a report form St. JON Laboratories on the processing
procedures for Raw Hide Chews.
1. Wet salted cowhides are soaked for 12-24 hours in lime/sodium
sulfide solution (pH14) to take out the hair.
2. Remove hides from bath and place in drum tumbler. Hides are
tumbles until hide is rawhide.
3. Split and remove inner hide from rawhide.
4. Place hides in water bath and rinse thoroughly.
5. Tumble hide with Ammonium Sulfate solution at 2% application
rate.
6. Repeat step 4 with fresh water.
7. Tumble hide with 50% Hydrogen Peroxide solution at 2%
application rate.
8. Cut hide into desired strip sizes.
9. Arrange strips on drying racks and dry in oven for 12-24 hours
at 50 degrees C.
10. Tumble strips in Enzymatic solution at 1.9% Application Rate.
11. Air dry strips for 8 hours and package.
This same procedure are used in China. APELSA operates under GMP
(Good Manufacturing Principles) guidelines and is in possession of
USDA permit number C1966.
