Re: [PyrNet-L] Care, Chat: Is this a Pyr behavior?

My boy was everyones friend, he loved everyone, it was not until he
was 17 months old that he met a person that he was unsure of. He was
also raised by my very alpha spayed girl and she decided when it was
time for him to take the next step, she would not let him go out in
the field alone until he was over 10 months old, she hovered and
scolded if he did. Very slowly in his second year, he has begun to
realize that not everyone is a nice guy and he is now starting to
guard his property and home and at times act quite serious about it.
He also will pull his head away, if someone wants to touch him, that
he does not want touching him. He is becoming quite discerning now.
There has been lots of talk about the males letting the girls do all
the work, then step in at the last minute <vbg>. Whether this has
been the case all along, or if he has finally matured, I love it and
find their development really quite fascinating. Until a few months
ago, his bark would start on a high note and then lower to the big
boof, now it's all big, low, serious business. Which tells me, he is
confident about himself now. When his bark was higher, he would stand
and leap and posture before running out to see what was going on, now
he just charges ahead. Guess my baby boy has finally grown up!

You don't say how old your girl is, but if she is skittish around new
situations, you may want to take her to some dog obedience classes,
if you haven't already. Not only are they learning and working, but
the socialization really helps their confidence. I worked really
hard on socializing Kazak and exposing him to all types of
situations. The only thing he still balks at are those dreaded gas
meters. Must be the slight hissing sound they make, he really hates
them. Strange, as the oxygen units at the nursing home don't bother
him at all.
Judith & Kazak < gee mom, are you sure that great, big, gray snake
won't get me>
