[PyrNet-L] Care, Chat: Off she goes!

Here are some things I have used on those rare times when Albert has
escaped and won't come to me. I sometimes turn around and run the other way
and run behind something where Albert can't see me. Often they will stop and
come to see what you are so interested in and as they round the corner you can
grab them. (Albert loves to be where the action is! He doesn't want to miss
out on anything.) Or with Albert I could probably just head to the blackberry
bushes and pretend to eat some!! (Albert loves to eat blackberries!!) Or go
get a treat and sit down at the picnic table or one of the park benches and
start eating something! (Albert's very food-motivated!!) Or start playing
with one of their favorite toys and look like you want to keep it to yourself,
cause it's just too fun to share! (Albert's soccer ball, or small tire, or
orange cone would all work well for this.) Another thing that worked once was
to start up the van like I was leaving. (Albert loves to go for rides!) Or
another thing that worked when nothing else did....was to just go in the house
and within 2 minutes he was wanting in! (He really loves to be with his
humans and in the house, too.)
I wish saying "Down", "sit", or "stay", or "come" worked better, but at
least now it does no good if he REALLY has his heart set on being out of
reach. With Albert half the fun is the chase! If I chase, he thinks it's a
big game! So I will no longer chase after him on the very rare occasions when
he's gotten away. I'd rather out-wit him! I know pretty well that basically
Albert loves to be with his humans, hates to miss out on something, is food
motivated, loves to play, loves to go on walks and rides. So I use that
knowledge of him against him but for his safety.
Always remember an ounce of prevention goes a long ways, though. As much
as humanly possible do everything possible to prevent escapes in the first
place! But since pyrs are infamous for being escape artists, it's good to
have a few tricks up your sleeve, just in case!
