I agree about the intense severity of orthopedic surgery pain. My personal
opinion
is that it's a good idea to give the dog some pain meds if you're there to
watch him while he's on them, to make sure he doesn't injure himself while not
feeling the pain. I firmly believe that deep restful sleep is essential to
speedy healing, and during the acute stages of post-op, the meds can help;
again provided there is constant supervision. Would any decent parent give
their 5yr old child pain meds following surgery and then let them wander
around on the repaired limb in a euphoric or reduced pain state? I think not.
I think a common sense approach is the best recourse here. Poor puppy!!
