I've tried ALOT of training methods over the years, and by far the most
effective that I have found for decent behavior infractions (of course
depending on the dog and the offense) is the "grab by the ruff, lift and stare
into their eyes, and describe exactly what's on your mind to the dog."  It's
easily understandable to the dog, nonviolent, and gets the point across!!!!
Try not to be too threatening tho, it's not meant to scare, only to assert
dominance and a message. Afterwards, five or so minutes of relative passivity
towards the dog lets it know you mean what you say.
