[Fwd: [PyrNet-L] Adding to my life]
Tom,
There are indeed several excellent breeders on this list, and other knowlegeable
people who give some wonderful advice, and those who just relay the joys of day to
day living with their Pyrs.
However, I must strongly differ with this broad brush that that those who have ads
in "any dog magazine" or newspaper were painted with. Rather, education (and not
a little insight into human nature truth/deception) is the key to a puppy buyer's
success. There are some excellent helps on finding a responsible breeder - start
with your own check list before you call, communicate. I do my own "interviews"
of puppy inquirers as well. People who don't mention neuter or spay with
companions as a requirement - those who don't give written guarantees, or have
never shown their dogs are not going to provide you with a quality puppy - nor
will they be there for you 1 - 2 years later. THEY cause most of the problem with
so many rescue dogs. Considering clubs, organizations, friends, advertisements
as part of the whole picture will likely get the results you want. Many good
breeders advertise in dog magazines, and many excellent puppy owners have come
together for a lifetime of sharing a wonderful dog. Let's not draw too small a
circle of "acceptable" people from which to obtain a dog - everyone doesn't run in
the same circles - but the mark of ALL those who love the breed are willingness to
share knowledge, REQUIRED neuter/spay of companions, assistance of puppy owners
throughout the life of their dog through friendship and communication.
I also can understand the frustration of those in rescue....and it is a factor
that responsible owners shouldn't buy from irresponsible breeders, so maybe
education, education, education will one day stem the tide in rescue.
Tom you are obviously a consciencious and intelligent, concerned pre puppy owner
doing some research before acquiring a Pyr. Good luck to you (and that lucky Pyr
you may own).
