Re: [PyrNet-L] Is it too late?
Hi Rose,
Agree emphatically with the others. It's never too late for training.
To address some points you raised: (incidentally, this can also be found in
the archives- raised by other people with the same problem)
1. If he's jumping- use the Sit! command and start teaching him Stay! as in
sit-stay. Make sure he gets lots of praise (and pets) for sitting and
staying. Nothing for jumping. No attention. Etc. Make him sit before the
kids pet him. Sit for his food. Sit for treats. Etc. And teach your kids to
use the Sit command as well. Be there to enforce it (help them) if he does
not respond to a firm Sit! from them. Then reward!!
2. For the "catch me!" part, sounds like he's taught you all to play a great
game for him. Try calling him in for really positive experiences only- like
dinner, a walk, belly rubs, treats, a new chew toy, etc. If it's hot where
you are, and you've given him ice cube treats before and he likes them, just
stand at your door with the treat and talk about it happily, excitedly. If
that doesn't work as a lure, come closer to him with the really interesting
or smelly treat, but approach slowly. Do not chase. Furry snakes can be
useful as well. When he comes to you or the door, lots of praise!!!
Happy Trails!
