I don't actually think this is an "unfortunate" result at all. In fact, it
is intentional, and there are a lot of games out there that behave in the
same manner (Soccolot, for example). And it is quite natural that people
will get confused every once in a while and put 'N' when they mean 'S' and
viceversa. But this is to be expected. If the board were fixed, with player
1 going up and player 2 going down for both of them, player 2's would begin
complaining that they always mistake their pawn with the other player's
pawn, trying to go up when they should be going down.
Then again, it might be interesting to implement that as another display
option available to the players, like the fences and the dots/crosses
stuff. But I don't feel like messing with that right now. Perhaps some
other implementor would like to take care of that (dzander? sharkey?
