i thought somebody might say this, so i'm not surprised.  i must admit after 
reading drp's idea i didn't give it much additional thought before sending 
out my message.

but as i said before, i think the fact that in soccolot there's a tendency 
for the men to all clump around the ball is a problem.  and i've given some 
thought as to a solution, but i haven't come up with much.  a couple of 
ideas i had (and these are just ideas, i don't know if they'll work or if 
they're necessarily good):

- make a rule that a man can be orthogonally adjacent to at most one 
friendly man

- make a rule that a man can be adjacent to at most one friendly man

- give the men different strengths and weaknesses.  this would make it more 
chess-like, which might appeal to those who like chess variants, but may be 
undesirable to many who would rather keep the rules simpler.

- make the board bigger and add more men.

that's all i can think of right now.
