[pbmserv-dev] Re: The debate over graphics

I must admit, I am confused by all this talk about java and links and
everything. I need to do further personal research. Just out of
curiosity, does anyone know of a good website that explains to a beginner
how java works and how to tie it in with url's? Maybe I should explain
something, at home I use an 80 column terminal emulator and to surf the
web I go to my local library. At our library we do not have audio, or
quicktime. We also have an older version of flash. Now the thing is, that
I looked up the url of LOA that was suggested and it said that it doesn't
work with any browser other than Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In fact,
it said that Netscape doesn't allow java applet's to be downloaded and
installed. Am I missing something here? I thought java applets were
automatically downloaded and installed as soon as a person clicked on the
proper link? Also, I am just wondering how this is supposed to work for
persons who use public computers. If we are not allowed to download the
applet and install it on a public computer, then how do we view a graphic
that decodes the move sent by Richard's server? I am totally confused!
(public computers do not allow people to download programs or install
applications like quicktime, flash, or anything else for that matter!)
My whole point I wish to make about this is that we *make* Richard's server
do all the work for the players. A lot of players do not understand how
to download and install a bunch of applets for front-end GUI's or they are
not allowed to because they may use public computers. I just thought it
would be nice if a player could just set an option and presto, the email
shows a high resolution graphic of the board without the user having to figure
out how to load stuff or access special urls. Anyways, this is all mute
now because Hotmail (where I have my email account) does not display graphics
in their email anymore like they used to.

I guess I might as well let this topic drop. Thanks for everyone's help
and suggestions.
