I know it's tough to lose a character, but there really
isn't much argument here; it's in the Cyborg book.
Look under the Hindrance, Unfettered. First of all, the
manitou isn't trapped in the fetter; the fetter keeps it
trapped in the deader's brain. It's like a plug between the
manitou and the hunting grounds, siphoning off energy to
power the cyborg systems. Take the plug away, and the
manitou takes off, leaving one dead hombre.
Which is exactly what it says under Unfettered; if you have
enough levels to reduce the manitou's Spirit below a d4 for
powering cyborg systems then it has broken free of the
fetter, leaving a corpse to be buried by your buddies.
