Perhaps the Unity has been sitting dormant for so long
that the protective coating on the exterior hull has
degraded from AV:20 to AV:3 over time. Atrittion can
be hell on advanced technology after all. Without
dedicated maintenance and downtime the systems on the
ship have been slowly failing. It (she?) was hardly
moth-balled for extended service after all. 

Alternatively, the armour counts as AV: 3 for mundane
weapons (the Unity was hardly a warship against other
warships but instead an explorer in the outer dark)
but counts as AV: 20 against unnatural weapons. For
demons, the bloody thing is a battleship, for a
machinegun, it's target practice. 

Alternatively again, multiply the armour value by a
factor of ten. What ever works for you.
