Re: [HOE] Wasted Europe - UK stuff

Hi Dave,
First up, for the people reading this 'cause their automated
e-mail monitoring systems picked up on the word "nuke", its about a game -
no, we aren't going to nuke Europe! Go to www.peginc.com and look at
Deadlands: Hell on Earth. That said, on with the post..... :-)

I have a few ideas about this. I can only answer with certainty
about the UK, but being a soldier it is something I have thought about.
Some general points to consider are:
        1) Castles - we have TONS of them. they wouldn't be priority
targets, but they sure as hell would be survivor gathering places.
        2) Firearms - illegal for civilians to own except under special
circumstances, so ammo and firearms would be a hell of a lot rarer. The
first thing I'd do if I survived a nuke exhchange would be to find an
army/navy/RAF base and raid all the ammo and firearms I could from the
guardhouse and/or armoury....
        3) Small distances, so news travels faster. That said, fallout
travels faster too.
        4) The Peak District and Scotland's highlands have very few viable
targets in them, so would be relitively untouched.
        5) History - we have history, folklore and myth stretching back ten
times longer than the US has been settled, and longer still - *grin* an
American tourist once said the thing about visiting England that made the
biggest impression was staying in a bed and breakfast hotel older than his
country. Stress the history and myth. Plus there are so many different
legends you can turn into horrible slavering creatures. The same goes for
any country in Europe, but I can only really speak of the UK with any
authority). As an idea, the US has the Templars, the UK could have King
Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table (or an organisation similar).
Druidic magic. The Beast of Bodmin moor. The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The Loch Ness Monster.
        6) Culture - there are a few differences in culture, but remember
by the 2070s the cultures of UK and US will be almost identical in many
ways, so *please* don't protray all UK folks as farmers, cockneys or
gentlemen (Shadowrun's UK sourcebook was the worst for this).

Useful links and specific ideas (this all assuems they didn't just
carpet-nuke the UK to oblivion, 'cause its small enough to):

Cities:
Obviously a major target would be London, but other major
nuke-able cities in the UK are: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham
(industrial), Sheffield (industrial), York, Newcastle, Machester. Aside
from them, look at nukes on to military targets and specific others (like
the Sellafield(sp?) nuclear power plant, etc).

Ghost Rock:
As was pointed out, the "white cliffs" could easily be the
"Ghost Cliffs". Also, Yorkshire was big on mining coal until the government
privatised and/or closed down most of the pits ten to fifteen years ago.
Ghost rock could easily be found there. Remember, place it where it would
cause the most conflict (the Reckoners would). Dover's cliffs are easy to
reach from France, so would be a good way to cause trouble.

Oil Rigs:
Loads of them in the North Sea. Some may have been destroyed,
but not all. Whats happening there? One of the few sources of
petroleum-grade oil in the world?

Army:
Major barrack towns are Catterick, Aldershot and Tidworth.
There are too many little bases and Territorial Army (National Guard) bases
to effectively take out all of them. Hereford would be a high-priority
target, though (official home of the UK special forces, though I bet they
wouldn't be there if nukes were flying...).

Air Force:
A small map cotaining the location of all the RAF bases in the
UK (the RAF have all the most useful websites when compared to the other
services).
                http://www.raf.mod.uk/stations/
Some priority targets would be UKADGE (the air defense
equipment) and any of the command headquarters. As a point of interest,
there is a US airbase at Mildenhall in the UK.

Royal Navy:
A link to the locations of major Naval bases.
                http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/static/pages/1942.html
Most important targets would be HMNB Clyde (the submarine and
nuke base) and HMNB Devonport which is the major fleet servicing base.

Other European ideas/points:
Language - not everyone speaks English. In a tip of the hat to
my European neighbours many do, but by no means all. In an after-the-bomb
type world, language education is going to be *low* priority.
Switzerland(sp?) - major banking location. Boom.
Vatican city - major target for the Reckoners? Perhaps until
the Unity events it was under seige by their forces. Maybe they are still
fighting against the forces the Reckoners left behind.
Russia - HUGE amounts of open space not worth nuking 'cause not
much lives there - big survivor migrations there, I reckon, just for the
farmland.

I hope these ideas help. Unfortunately I'm going away on deployment for
two months in a few days, otherwise I'd love to help you flesh out the
UK/Europe for HOE. Darn.... Please let em know how it goes.

        Take care,

                            Shane

I know we've touch on this topic before, but it generally seemed
poo-pooed, taking a western game out of the west. WELL, my posse has
requested that we somehow get to europe and explore once we've concluded
with the Unity thread. I've got some ideas of whats going on and how to
get there, but I was wondering if our european friends could help me out.
I'm trying to figure out some notable loctations and settlements for the
heros to explore, but so far its just the ruins of cities we americans
only know about because their capital/larger cities, such a Munich,
Paris, London, Berlin, Dublin, Madrid, Barcelona, Venice, and Rome. do
you have any sugestions for probable targets of city busters, good places
for survivors to gather, and where ghost rock deposits might be. Thank
you!
