As an alternate solution, one I don't see made mention of often, try talking
to the players one-on-one and see how they would feel if their character
died.

Some folks are going to be attached to their characters.  That's just
natural.  Don't force the issue; this isn't an offer they can't refuse or
something.

But some folks might not mind if their character died, so long as it wasn't
a completely pointless death.  This might be the case with characters who've
been around for a while and the player wants to try something new.  If he
doesn't just want to retire his character, but he wants to switch over to
something else, talk to him about lending you his character's mortality.
Heck, get his take on how he'd like to go out and try to work that in the
final battle.  See if he'd be willing to go along with it to add that extra
little dramatic spice.  Of course, you wouldn't be telling the OTHER players
about this; make sure they all think it's something that only they've been
asked.  You want to preserve SOME of the impact a character death has.
