RE: [HOE] Re I dont wanna go on a rant here

It's probably less of a "force us to use HTML" and more of a "don't force
them (aol programmers) to use anything else." If they only have to program
for one format option, then they have less work to do. AOL provides sooo
many good examples of bad programming...

I downloaded the eSquire (listserv program) files from gamerz.net, but
haven't had the time to wade thru the Perl scripts to see if there is a way
to remove the HTML at the listserv-software end. Given some free time (ha!)
I could build a listserver in Java, and have it strip out HTML. I do Java
all day long every day. Perl I understand, but rarely get to use, so it's
taking time figure out this existing code. It's possible that the part I
need to look at isn't even part of the eSquire package, but included inside
Perl itself, in which case it gets even more difficult. And even if I did
figure it out, I'd have to get approval from eSquire's author as well as his
assistance to include it in the base eSquire package.

The gist of this? AOL 6.0 users are going to dump html into the list
digests unless the user goes out of the way to get an outside mail source
(hotmail, etc.). And since Deputy Seyberth has pardon'ed AOL6 users without
lifting the html-ban for the rest of us, then this is just the way it's
going to be.
